APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR COACHELLA VALLEY ONLY:

April 30, 2010 9PM PST

Please note that submitting your application early does NOT offer any advantage in being selected. Therefore, PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME to read the instructions carefully and prepare the best application possible.

Health Career Connection (HCC) is a non-profit organization that provides paid internship opportunities to undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in health care and public health, including health policy, administration & management, community health, nursing administration, and health education.

While all students are eligible, we strongly encourage students of color to apply as HCC has a commitment to increasing the number of healthcare leaders and professionals from all ethnic groups. HCC also has a priority emphasis on students interested in eliminating health disparities and improving access and care for underserved populations.

Students apply into the HCC program, not specific positions. Placement decisions are made based on intern interests and qualifications and site availability at the time of final selection.

Guidelines for this internship are:

  • Internships are full time (approximately 40 hours/week) educational opportunities which last 10 continuous weeks (from early-June through early-September). All candidates must be able to commit to ten continuous weeks within this time frame. The actual start date may vary by intern because of school schedules, intern circumstances, and host organization preferences; we will work with your academic year schedule as much as possible to arrive at a mutually-acceptable arrangement.
  • Attending summer school or studying for standardized tests while pursuing this internship is strongly discouraged.
  • Internships are located in New England (Boston, Connecticut and Rhode Island), Northern California (Sacramento, San Francisco Bay Area and San Jose), Southern California (Greater Los Angeles and San Diego), Central California Valley (Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto), and New Jersey/New York (Manhattan, Bronx, Princeton). Please pay specific attention to the application instructions when choosing a region.
  • HCC does not cover relocation costs, housing, or transportation.
  • Payments have averaged $4000 per year in previous years. We are working hard to raise funds to maintain that. However, the 2010 stipend may be lower; this amount will be determined as we hear back from funding sources.
  • Based on applicant’s interests and skills set, selected finalists will be placed within prominent healthcare/public health organizations (hospitals, academic medical centers, community clinics, medical groups, health plans, health departments, & advocacy groups).
  • Through an apprenticeship model, each student is paired with a preceptor who will serve as a mentor and guide, sharing their experience and wisdom.
  • Interns will have the invaluable opportunity to participate in mandatory seminars and workshops, which are incorporated in the summer schedule as well as other important professional conferences and networking events.

Students from ALL fields, including but not limited to Health Sciences, Public Health, Healthcare Policy and Management, Community Health, Business, Political Science, Sociology, Biology, Finance and Pre-Medicine (with a strong interest in public health or health administration) are welcome to apply.

A complete application package must include the following:

  • Required fields are marked with an asterisk (*).
  • To submit your application, set the "Application Complete. Submit?" field to "YES!!!" (it is the last question) and click on "Save". Leave this field to "No" if you are still working on your application.
