Impact

Over the past 20 years, over 1000 interns have participated in Health Career Connection’s Internship Program; the majority over the past 6 years.  Over HCC has grown each year. HCC now places over 130 interns per year throughout our regions. HCC measures its success by accomplishments relative to its goals. Some high lights include:

 
1. Students discover and realize their full potential through a health career that is authentically aligned with their background, talents, goals, and the difference they want to make
 
  • Over 95% of HCC interns report that participation in HCC had a profound influence on their career and educational choices and opportunities.
  • Many HCC alumni work in organizations that serve under-served communities
 
2. Organizations and graduate programs have access to diverse talented students, leaders and professionals that contribute to their diversity, quality and community health goals
 
  • 60% of HCC interns are offered jobs by the organizations where they intern
  • HCC alumni have gone on to complete their graduate education in top public health, medical, business, law and public policy schools. Others have gone on to education and clinical careers in nursing, pharmacy and physical therapy.
  • HCC alumni are currently completing their graduate work in schools such as: UC Berkeley, Harvard, Columbia, UCLA and Johns Hopkins Schools of Public Health; Harvard and Stanford Business Schools; Harvard Kennedy School of Government, UCSF and UCLA Medical Schools.
  • Over the past 8 years, over 7 HCC alums each year have been admitted to the Berkeley School of Public Health. Many have assumed leadership positions and made important change
 
3. Increasing the number of diverse, value driven health leaders and professionals capable of solving our complex health challenges. Inspire them to give back to their communities and to others behind them in the health career pipeline.
 
  • HCC alumni are currently working in administrative, clinical and community health leadership and management positions in leading health organizations including: Kaiser Permanente, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, COPE Health Solutions, Stanford Medical School, Sutter Health, Montefiore Hospital, Venice Family Clinic and Alameda County Public Health Department, Deloitte and Touche Consulting, Intermountain Healthcare and many others.
  • HCC interns and alumni work with health pipeline programs of students at the high school level that support local under-represented and disadvantaged students to pursue health careers. HCC work with programs in Fresno, Coachella Valley, Bronx, Oakland, Boston and Los Angeles. HCC has established partnerships with these programs so that HCC can support students at that level and also so that HCC can provide opportunities for graduates of those programs when in college.
  • HCC prioritizes recruitment of interns come from local communities. During their internship they work on projects focused on improving the health of underserved populations. Interns utilize their knowledge of the community and language and cultural skills to have an impact.
